Babatunde Omidina aka Baba Suwe has passed away. The veteran actor died on Monday at the age of 67. His death was announced by one of his daughters, Adesola Omidina, “This is to announce the sudden death of my father, Babatunde Omidina, legend and rare gem, Baba Suwe, on November 11, 2021. Details and other arrangements will be announced shortly”. Baba Suwe has become famous for his Comedy roles in Nollywood, Yoruba films. In 2018, he suffered ill health causing several Nigerians, including Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, to donate funds for his medical treatment abroad. News of his death has been confirmed by the president of the Association of Theater and Film Producers of Nigeria, Bolaji Amusan, also known as Mr Latin.
Born August 22, 1958, in Inabere Street on Lagos Island, where he grew up, but originally from the Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State. Omidina attended Islamic primary school Jamaitul Islamial primary school in Lagos and a children’s boarding school, Osogbo. He then continued his education at Adekanbi Commercial High School in Mile 12, Lagos. He obtained his West African School Certificate from Ifeoluwa Grammar School in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State in southwestern Nigeria. In 1971, Omidina started acting but rose to fame after appearing in a movie called “Omolasan ”, a movie produced by Obalende. He rose more in fame after his appearance in Iru Esin, produced by Olaiya Igwe in 1997. He also starred and produced in several Nigerian films such as Baba Jaiye Jaiye, a film starring Funke Akindele and Femi Adebayo.
In 2011 he was charged with cocaine trafficking by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, a charge described as false and defamatory by the ruling of the Lagos State High Court. His lawyer was the late Bamidele Aturu, a Nigerian lawyer and human rights activist.
